Metro Vancouver Urban Aboriginal Strategy is offering:
Free Workshops for Employees/Volunteers of Aboriginal Organizations at the Native Education College
 
Employees/volunteers of Metro Vancouver Aboriginal Organizations are invited to participate in free capacity building workshops sponsored by the Metro Vancouver Urban Aboriginal Strategy Steering Committee at the Native Education College.
 
The following capacity building workshops will be held throughout the month of March 2010 at the Native Education College:
 
March 5, 2010- Effective Fundraising for Non-Profit Organizations by Kristin Kozuback
·       This workshop helps participants learn about the different types of fundraising, identify the fundamental components of an effective fund raising plan and methods of raising funds for a non-profit organization.
 
March 9 & 23, 2010 – Understanding and Building Cultural Relationships by Gary Johnston
  • This one day workshop provides the participant with an overview of the history, traditional and contemporary lifestyles and the cultural diversity of the First Nations of BC.
  • Participants will learn about common terms associated with First Nations/Aboriginal people, identify the number of First Nations Bands in the province, identify some of the cultural/language groupings, traditional dwellings and learn about some of the traditional activities and events.
 
March 11, 2010 – Financial Fitness by Stewart Anderson (VANCITY)
  • This interactive and engaging workshop covers fundamental financial, accounting and legal matters to help not-for-profit organizations build stability and sustainability.
 
March 12, 2010 – Non-Profit Communications Planning by Kristin Kozuback
  • This workshop helps participants identify the components of a successful media strategy and understand the range of communication tools available and how to match them with communications objectives and target audiences.
 
March 16 & 18 – Legal Limberness by Mary Childs (Pivot Legal LLP)
·         Through this workshop participants will learn about board members’ roles and duties, key governance documents, provincial legislation, intellectual rights, and rules governing charities.
March 19, 2010 – Creative Communications for Conflict Resolution by Gael McCool
  • This workshop will help participants understand the underlying dynamics of communication, establish a secure environment for open communication, identify the underlying needs of participants in conflict and utilize techniques to incorporate rather than isolate differences.
 
March 24 & 25, 2010 – Board Governance for Aboriginal Non-Profit Organizations by Cliff White (this is a 2 day workshop)
 
 
  • Cliff White is a Hereditary Leader with the Gitxaala Nation with extensive experience working with Aboriginal organizations. In this workshop you will learn how to get a not for profit started, the different board structures, planning for successful boards and dealing with the challenges of a volunteer Board of Directors.
How to register:
 
 
All workshops will be held at the Native Education College- 285 East 5th Avenue, Vancouver BC from 9am to 4pm in Room 214.
 
A free lunch and coffee will be provided at each workshop.
 
Registration will take place on a first come first serve basis until each workshop is filled. Each workshop will hold up to 15 participants. Therefore, participants are encouraged to sign up ASAP!!!
