Aboriginal Youth Tourism Employment Project
SPO7EZ Cultural Centre and Community Society

- The Aboriginal Youth Ambassador Program is a Squamish Nation initiative. The program was intended to assist urban Aboriginal youth in exploring and developing tourism-related careers. Participating youth received cultural interpretation training from Squamish Nation Elders and other community members prior to involvement in the World Urban Forum. Job placements in tourism workplaces - to gain practical experience - were also included in the program.
Aboriginal Arts Studio
Knowledgeable Aboriginal Youth Association

- The Knowledgeable Aboriginal Youth Association (KAYA) developed the Aboriginal Arts and Culture Mentorship project, which enabled ten Aboriginal youth artists from around the Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) to plan and create an art studio with assistance from coordinators at KAYA and with mentorship from local Aboriginal artists from the community. This project promoted new Aboriginal services and initiatives.
Vancouver Aboriginal Awards
Aboriginal Community Career Employment Services (ACCESS)

- The 2nd Greater Vancouver Urban Aboriginal Awards Event recognized and honoured individuals of Aboriginal, Inuit and Metis heritage that have significantly contributed to the urban Aboriginal community in the Greater Vancouver Regional District. The event was held on June 14, 2006 at the Vancouver Centre for the Performing Arts. Award categories included nominations include: 1) Community Leadership; 2) Knowledge Keepers; 3) Youth; 4) Health, Housing, Homelessness and Family; and 5) The Lifetime Achievement award. In collaboration with the Greater Vancouver Urban Aboriginal Strategy Aboriginal Awards Event Working Group, Numa Communications designed the awards nomination and selection process, fundraised, marketed and co-coordinated the event.
Olympic Community Forums and Celebration
2010 Legacies Now

- 2010 Legacies Now Society, in partnership with the Greater Vancouver Urban Aboriginal Strategy, (GVUAS) will organize two events: 1) an Opportunities Workshop, Tradeshow & Community Forum held March 15, 2007; and, 2) a Community Celebration to be held on March 24, 2007. The Opportunities event will inform the Aboriginal community of volunteer, employment, cultural and sporting activities leading up to and during the 2010 Winter Games. The Community Celebration event will create and strengthen arts, culture and volunteer capacity within the urban Aboriginal community, both for and after the Winter Games.
Support for Aboriginal Research
Centre for Native Policy and Research

- The Centre for Native Policy Research (CNPR) will provide research, policy and facilitation with a focus on the social, economic and environmental public policy of Aboriginal people. The program will be providing core funding for CNPR to allow them to carry out their ongoing research, policy and facilitation work.
Public Awareness and Mentorship Program
Aboriginal Community Career Employment Services (ACCESS)

- The Aboriginal Community Career Employment Services Society, in partnership with Numa Communications, will develop, launch and deliver an urban Aboriginal Awareness Campaign. The campaign will help foster a greater awareness of the urban Aboriginal Community's values, partnerships and successes, engage the private sector in new partnership developments and spread awareness of the potential of the growing urban Aboriginal youth population in the GVRD. In addition to carrying out the campaign, the proponent will incorporate a media-training component, whereby Aboriginal Youth will learn how to draft media releases, develop and co-ordinate media kits and participate in public relations activities.
Youth Engagement Study
South Fraser Community Services

- The scope of work involves four phases as follows: 1) Conducting a gap analysis of services for Aboriginal youth in the South Fraser area; 2) Conducting photography engagement workshops with Youth; 3) Organizing a youth forum to document the needs of Aboriginal youth in the South Fraser area and 4) Completing a final report to advise the next phase of work.
Aboriginal Technical Assistance Program

- The Technical Assistance Program for Aboriginal Not-for-Profits (TAP) was created to support the capacity building efforts of B.C.'s Aboriginal not-for-profit organizations. The program offers grants to individual Aboriginal not-for-profits to help them identify and address their organizational challenges, provides development training opportunities and development resources in areas such as governance, financial management and strategic planning.
Aboriginal Youth Skills Link
UFCW Local 247

- UFCW Local 247 Training and Education Centre Society are conducting a Skills Link Training Program, which began on December 12, 2006. The program will consist of one intake of 16 participants for a duration of 8 weeks, (along with some initial promotion a couple of weeks prior to this). The purpose of the project is to enhance employability for Aboriginal youth in the construction trades sector skills through their participation in skill development workshops and other group activities, and by enhancing their trades related occupational skills through practical on-the-job work experience. This project was funded through an agreement with Service Canada, and not as a result of GVUAS Strategic Planning. It did not use regular GVUAS project funds.
Native Youth Centre Planning
United Native Youth Association (UNYA)

- Project funding will be used for the following activities: 1. Architectural Services - Funds shall be applied to the revision of conceptual drawings and Class B cost estimates for the construction of the proposed Centre; 2. Consulting Services - Funds shall be applied to the cost of retaining consultants to engage potential funders, community stakeholders and project-related third parties. Overall project co-ordination will be provided in addition to any necessary business planning activities; and, 3. Community Development Services - Funds shall be used to allow existing UNYA staff and administrative resources the time to devote to the proposed Centre's capital campaign activities.
Aboriginal Health Forums
Vancouver Coastal Health

- Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) will organize and facilitate two Aboriginal Conversations on Health forums in the Greater Vancouver Regional District. The program will be providing funding for VCH to allow them to carry out two community forums as a part of the British Columbian Provincial Government's "Conversations on Health" consultation process on the future design of public health services.
Aboriginal Women in Trades Program
Aboriginal Community Career Employment Services (ACCESS)

- Project funding will assist the Aboriginal Community Career Employment Services Society (ACCESS) in providing Aboriginal women an opportunity to explore the possibility of a rewarding career in trades. The Women in Trades - Access to Apprenticeship Program, in partnership with the Construction Industry Training Institute, will ensure employment in trades and construction is more accessible to Aboriginal women by assisting them in developing a career plan, gaining technical skills and supporting them through the certification/employment process.
